As the White House downplayed suggestions that its coalition was beginning to fray, Bush lobbied the Dutch prime minister on the issue but won no commitment that 1,300 troops from the Netherlands would remain in Iraq beyond June. At the same time, Honduran officials said Tuesday that they would pull their 370 troops out of Iraq during the summer, and diplomats speculated that El Salvador (news - web sites) and Guatemala might follow suit.

re: Are you kidding? And cut back on defense? Bite your tongue!

I said military offense, not defense. The war in Iraq carries incremental cost. Part of those dollars could be used for intel and other defensive programs.

I wonder what the "shock and awe" display cost?

John, I think cutting back on anything military in this country is considered a venal sin. Clinton did and for the past three years, all we've heard from the GOP is how he screwed us militarily.

I saw the estimated numbers for Shock and Awe once.........we paid plenty!
