ORGANIC FOODS

Hi croc,

Re: Are any of the major food chains in the U.S. starting to stock large lines of organic products yet?

Absolutely. There is a chain in the U.S. called "Whole Foods" that has seen phenomenal growth over the past decade.

wholefoods.com

They set up a store here in Bend about 5 years ago and it has been a great success. Initially, some of us were concerned that they would drive the other locally owned organic and natural food stores out of business, but this hasn't been the case as the city has grown quite a lot and people's attitudes about wholesome food has been changing significantly.

For example, I took some major brand Chilean grapes to party last Friday night. One of the first questions asked by another guest was "do they still use DDT in Chile?"

So, the consciousness and concern is definitely out there.

As far as our supermarkets go, we have much larger "organic" sections in produce departments than we had 5 years ago. But I haven't spotted the organic frozen entrees yet. Probably only because I'm never looking for such things.

Safeway and Albertsons both have very nice selections of organic foods in their larger stores. I used to have to drive quite a distance to Whole Foods- now I can get my organic stuff at the regular chains. Of course this IS California- maybe it is different in other states.
