Supporters of Howard Dean may have been confounded to recently receive an e-mail message from him asking for money, well after he had left the presidential race.

Dr. Dean said the campaign owed printers, restaurants and merchants who had provided essentials like buses and staging equipment. And he is not the only unsuccessful candidate who has worked to retire debt after the elections. Wesley K. Clark also sent letters, though his campaign took a different approach.

Just one day after folding on Feb. 11, the campaign asked supporters for contributions to buy a commemorative plaque for the general. General Clark's campaign manager, Paul Johnson, sent a letter saying that contributors could get their name placed on it for a $100 donation.
