What should it have done differently (besides losing track of them and getting involved in a major distraction called Iraq)?

Al, I think you are misunderstanding........I don't think anyone is saying we should have done something differently with the Taliban. Its the tracking and capturing of al Qaeda we're doing wrong.

The Spaniards knew the guys who ultimately pulled off 3/11 were up to no good; however, they got bored tracking them.....and lost track of them. Its very clear now........we can't get bored. We need to watch these guys 24/7 until they make their move. That's how we will weaken al Qaeda.....one cell at a time.

Its dirty work but someone has to do it if we aren't to live in fear.

Sorry Al, I didn't mean to pile on, I didn't see the other posts making the same point.

re: But post 9/11, how the US dealt with Taleban was to go through a fairly patient process of warning and demands for turn over of AQ and BL. What should it have done differently (besides losing track of them and getting involved in a major distraction called Iraq)?

I agree. But that doesn't make the Taleban terrorists. In fact I think the term terrorist is thrown around way too easily these days. It's an ugly term and should be used with precision.

It could be said that Saudi Arabia, Iran, North Korea, Sudan, Pakistan... are harboring terrorists. (Maybe not at the highest level of government, but certainly as a "country"). Despite the Bush doctrine, if you don't make the distinction, you are setting your self up for quite a few wars.

I think we're on the same page, just arguing semantics.
