I doubt anyone after 9/11 had the luxury of negotiating too long with the Taliban, but considering the performance leading up to the next war I wonder if there was even a serious effort to get Al Qaeda without a war.

I remember warnings to turn AQ folks over well before we started cooperating with the NA and eventually opened a bombing campaign.

Iraq is a different matter...it exposed the crude neocon approach I think you are talking about...but I can't fault the administration's options and choices in Afghanistan.
