The problem with those voting records (for someone like me) is that they take into account his votes on social issues. On those issues, Kerry is very liberal; so am I!

His record on defense and the economy is definitely centrist. On the economy, Kerry supported budget cuts and fiscal responsibility. He voted FOR every defense budget, but against some weapons systems. (Cheney voted against the same weapons systems!) He argued he would not give the DOD everything they wanted ... I agree. I am reminded of this quote from Eisenhower:

"In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the militaryindustrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist." Eisenhower Farewell address, Jan, 1961

Kerry is for free trade (Bush is a protectionist). Kerry is for fiscal responsibility (I do not know how to characterize Bush<g> ... insane?). Kerry is for a strong defense, without giving into every new weapon system.

I would call that centrist.
