Re: Maybe it's all the fault of John Wayne and those machismo western movies. In 1945, Marion Morrison, aka "John Wayne" went on a USO tour. While his contemporaries in Hollywood at the time like Jimmy Stewart, Henry Fonda and others were selflessly serving in the Armed Forces, Morrison cagily decided to avoid serving and thereby leapfrogged over the other real patriots who had been leading men in Hollywood. The audience at one USO show knew exactly what the story was and booed John Wayne off the stage for being nothing but a poser. A fact that you won't find in his official biographies.
