Once you convince yourself that the Others are mindless automatons with unlimited ambitions

I'll say it again, this isnt a matter of me making up Al Qaeda's comments about Spain. They have talked about the loss of Spain a couple of different times.

You obviously have quite a bit more faith in human nature than I do. People tend to repeat methods that have shown them past success. You are welcome to read more into it than that....but I see it as a pretty simple concept.

Will you change your mind, and decide that compromises are possible, if in fact there are no more attacks on Spain (as the terrorists have just promised)? Or is this Belief a matter of Faith, not amenable to influence by Facts or Reason?

This is a very long timeline that we are talking about. The logical course for the terrorists would be to keep their promise to Spain and focus on other countries. They would only look back to Spain if they had won their other battles (US out of the ME and Israel removed from the map).

If the terrorists win those two battles and then stop, I would be more than willing to say that I was wrong.

However, I would like to point out that you have acknowledged the possibility of violence in France over the scarf law. I doubt that we would have thought of such a thing prior to 9/11. It would seem this would already be a (possible) example of their goals expanding.

Again....I see it as human nature.
