I HAVE seen it up close- so you speculate incorrectly- I just didn't see the point of bringing it up. I can relate- but it doesn't lead me to the same place you have gone to. You see- it is comfortable for you to think that, but it is not true. My husband's friends have been laid off. Unfortunately some of them were mediocre- about what you'd expect, statistically speaking. Really brilliant engineers were reassigned, or started, or were hired by, start-ups. Even though people we know have been laid off, this does not change the fact that protectionism does not work. A personal association with something does not change the dynamics of the world- it usually only changes your emotional response.

I did not say ONLY the less skilled are hurt. At least I don't think I said that. I believe I did say we need to find areas of excellence to retain any traction in the global economy. I think that is unassailable in terms of its logic- but if you have facts, give them to me. Show me how protectionism would work. But don't just tell me you know people who are out of work, and how great they are- because that isn't evidence of anything.
