The Bush administration never took the position that Saddam was responsible for 9/11.

I know that. But the misunderstanding that Iraqis were involved contributed mightily to US popular support for the war. And the Administration did take the position that Iraq was a terrorist threat to the US. This was connection 1 a relatively weak connection.

So to argue that Al Qaeda only became interested in Iraq because of the recent war demonstrates either either a lack of knowledge or a lack of understanding.

I am familiar with the AQ interest in Iraq that you mentioned. I won't argue that it didn't contribute to connection 2. I also acknowledge that this earlier interest coincided in time with connection 1.

But they're still two different connections. One is about terrorist threat to the US and the other is about AQ hatred of the US. The article in question distorted them when it lumped them together.
