I think it could be of benefit for the ME to have a democracy. As of now the only way to get rid of leaders is for them to step down (go into exile), be assassinated via revolution or die of old age. Democracy gives you a viable alternative just like cricket supplanted tribal wars in some third world areas.

The common idea was that the Arab world wanted a new Saladin but the best that was happening was a Nasser, a Sadat and then Saddam.

What do they have to lose? It seems that the old bugaboo of "losing face", their certain style of machismo is still unyielding.
