"common bottom limits", Condor. I do not think there are such things and if there are, there should not be IMO. The bottoms are when that next lower horizontal slice of ore (taking into account the extra waste to be removed) is uneconomic, or it is more economical to mine it from underground.

Bingham Canyon pit just outside of salt lake is +2500 feet deep. Can't think of any deeper but they do not brag about being the deepest. They do brag about being 1 of 2 manmade objects visible from space. The other one being the Great wall of China. Just in... Great wall is too thin to be seen from space. I reckon the copper miners have sole bragging rights!
