It's hard to believe that the people controlling this administration could have risen to their current positions of power and yet still be too stupid to see that simple truth.

It must be that, however, or that whatever prize they think they may secure is worth that cost. Given some theories of the role of cheap energy in geopolitical power, they may be right. Unfortunately for them, however, history has NEVER allowed the raw exercise of power to succeed for long, and the more reluctant or constrained the wielder of that power is to exercise that power ruthlessly, the less time the rule.

I have little faith that demagogues with an inability to recognize shades of gray are actually more clever than we would suspect. It's probably just another example of a political system gone awry so that talent and success become alienated.
