BBC - Taiwan's president shot at rally
Taiwan's President Chen Shui-bian and Vice-President Annette Lu have been shot at a rally a day before elections.
It is not clear how many shots were fired in the southern city of Tainan but Mr Chen was hit in the stomach and Ms Lu injured her leg.

Both were taken to hospital but officials said neither was in a serious condition and added that Mr Chen had urged people to stay calm.

Taiwan is holding its presidential election on Saturday.

Analysts say it will be a closely fought race.

An official at Chi Mei hospital in Tainan, the president's home town, said Mr Chen's motorcade had raced into the compound, which has now been closed off.

"The bullet hit the vice-president in the knee first, then the president," Wang Hsin-nan, a lawmaker from Mr Chen's Democratic Progressive Party told TVBS television.

The Taiwan Election Commission says that Saturday's vote will go ahead.
