<Once the Nazis had shown that an apparently civilized group of people was capable of the wildest evil> What you did not seem to learn from the Nazis is that we in America are also capable of doing things that are "wrong". The Nazis justified their brutal methods by rejoicing in the superior nature of Germans -- just as we in America do today by saying, in effect, that democracies in general can do no wrong, and Americans, as the leaders of the democratic world, certainly can do no wrong .

Hitler was elected. Democracies can do wrong. America can do wrong and has done wrong, many, many times in the past. By uncritically accepting the war in Iraq, you are repeating the worst mistake that Germans made when they rallied around Hitler's appeal to their wounded national and racial pride, their inflated national ego and their belief in German superiority to justify military invasion and the targeting of a demonized group of people as "the enemy".

Hi Neocon; Re: "I considered myself a pacifist for a few years, roughly from my junior year in high school to my junior year in college. ... Once the Nazis had shown that an apparently civilized group of people was capable of the wildest evil, of trying to exterminate whole peoples systematically, who knows what the malicious might contrive and promote unless held in check?"

I hadn't realized you were old enough to have been a junior in college back in 1945, when the Nazi atrocities came to light. You should have called yourself "paleocon".
