Yes, I believe that it does require an "isolation factor" of some kind. Up here, there continue to be many small towns which haven't changed all that much. I suppose a lot depends on the population distribution -- which is much lower than in the U.S. Also, some towns do take a stand to reject certain kinds of change. For example, one of the towns where I spend a great deal of time has taken a very firm stand against allowing major chain stores into the community. It's a wonder town with a very vital commercial area with stores of all kinds, restaurants, museums, one of the most incredible town parks, etc.. I think it's terrific. Of course, it took a lot of unity from the community to go this route, but it's a neat place. Lots of interesting self-employed people, tradesman, artisans, etc.. Obviously an unusual example, but very nice to see all the same.
