<<I've heard of people having a heck of a time getting their SS turned back on if they decide your dead and you're not.>>

I was my mother's guardian but her SS went directly to the nursing home she was at. After my mother died she got another check which was forwarded to me. I called SS and told them I'd return the check. They told me to deposit the check and they'd contact me about repaying it.

SS didn't but they froze all 4 of my bank accounts and fooled around a month taking the money before turning my account's loose. Thank God I had $2 large in cash on hand.

When a friend of ours died, they transposed the numbers that indicated her date of death on a form, so instead of the correct 12/10 it read 10/12 and the SS in the blink of an eye had deducted the monthly payments of november and december from her direct deposit account as being overpayments. The lesson is to have it deposited to an account, then immediately moved to another. It will take her kids a long time to get it returned if they decide to pursue it.
