You look at "per cm sq" load capacity of the material and the cross section of it you need. All this after finding out in which direcion the load with bend your structure of course

Yeah, the loads and stresses at particular points in the materials vary depending on the geometric configuration of the structure and where and how large the load is. To determine THOSE, you got through all those calcs.

Hey, I'm not a civil inginer, but I still had to take some of their classes and remember some of it.
