It used to be that Rhetoric and Composition were two required first year courses in College. 19th Century, of course.

I think most colleges still require a composition course, but the one I had to take was a joke. Real puffy stuff from the English dept.

My Anthro and Philosophy courses were great in that regard. All essay exams. Lots of writing.

One other thing that I believe American Universities are really lacking is instilling research skills. I think all first year college students should take a comprehensive research methods class of some sort.
