Mystery is solved... Someone in the earliest posts to me said it may be an instant messaging sound but I told him I wasn't doing any and hadn't in a long time. If fact my IM was turned off. In the next day of so I heard a sound of a door opening and a few seconds later got an IM from my 11 yr old grandson. I didn't associate the two. We chatted a few minutes and said goodbye. A minute of so later, I heard a door closing sound. I immediately called him on the phone and asked if he just got off the computer; he said he did. Ya gotta love em..... he has me on his IM list and I hear the sound when he comes on or goes off line even if he doesn't message me. I thank everyone for their suggestions ...... I hope my experience helps others.
