Taiwan High Court Orders Ballot Boxes Sealed

Taiwan’s High Court ordered the sealing of all ballot boxes island-wide today, saying it needed to preserve evidence after the opposition presidential candidate challenged the results of yesterday’s election.

Court spokesman Wen Yao-yuan announced the decision early in the morning, at the same time hundreds of angry Taiwanese were gathered outside the presidential office waving flags and blaring airhorns to protest the outcome.

President Chen Shui-bian narrowly defeated challenger Lien Chan, a former vice president. The loser sought to nullify the vote, saying more than 330,000 ballots had been spoiled and there were too many questions unanswered about a shooting on Friday that left Chen and Vice President Annette Lu slightly wounded.

The court spokesman said that no recount has been ordered, as Lien is demanding, but that the ballot boxes must be sealed for now.
