Al least 12 people were arrested for obstructing traffic. But the demonstration, one of a string across the country, while spirited and outspoken, appeared much smaller than those held here in the run-up to the war when more than 50,000 attended one of the protests. A long and brightly-coloured column of demonstrators, lead by the sound of beating drums, snaked through the streets of the arch-liberal West Coast city as they wound their way to the city's Civic Center to stage a noisy but peaceful rally. 'How dare you George W. Bush,' shouted San Francisco City supervisor Tom Ammiano to the cheering crowd in a park before the march through the city centre. 'How dare you shed Iraqi blood, American blood and the blood of others for your Republican ... agenda. 'You cannot occupy our minds. We are out of our minds. Bring the troops home -- and not in body bags,' he said. Food vendors mingled with members of scores of political and social organisations from anti-war groups to gay organisations who set up stands to promote their causes. The cheering crowd appeared united in their opposition to US President George W. Bush and the US military presence in Iraq, but also protested the US policy of unstintingly supporting Israel in its conflict against the Palestinian people. Heated verbal exchanges took place between pro-Israeli demonstrators and those who feel the Palestinian people are getting a raw deal from Israel and the United States, but no violence was reported. Sentiment towards Mr Bush's alleged 'lies' about the reason for the US-led attack on Iraq was heated, with many holding up placards and banners saying 'Bush lies, who dies?' and 'Bush lies, soldiers die, widow cries.' One demonstrator held up an inflatable Bush doll with a long Pinocchio nose, while one group set up a 'Bush Wall of Shame', a cardboard 'wall' detailing the alleged lies and failures of the US administration. Loud music filled the downtown San Francisco square and a fun-fair atmosphere pervaded the protest. Traditionally free-thinking San Francisco has been one of the major US centres for anti-war protests in the past years, including those in the 1960s when the United States was at war with Iraq. -- AFP
