<The best rationale for his problems with the National Guard thing is that he was in rehab and can't admit the truth.> A lot of people think junior refused to take his exam as required by the guard because he was afraid of the drug test. I think he may have taken it and failed the drug test part of it. Of course they couldn't allow the paper to stay in his records which would detail the failure so this is just speculation. If he did fail it could explain his community service and also his being grounded. He may have not really been AWOL, they may have just told him to go away and been afraid to court martial him because of his father. Later Poppy may have been able to get him an honorable discharge with his pull.

Notice that when Kerry opponents say things about Kerry they can back it up with factual sources. Bush opponents can only base their charges on their imagination. (yeah, that's right, they pant - he was a cokehead... and ...and a deserter ...yeah! ... and whatever else I can dream up.) Kerry was snowboarding over Secret Service agents. Yes, Kerry really made himself look like a punk on the slopes, calling a man pledged to defend his life a son of a bitch. And that "I don't fall!" horseshit, as if anyone never takes a spill on a ski slope. What a horse's ass he made of himself. They need to lock him in the barn for the rest of his vacation.
