""Today things look a little different though.""

Yes. They are better. Communist government people are becoming capitalists because "Chinese people" expect them to be better. They can not close the country like Mao did in his days anymore.

My families have direct investments in China. However most Chinese people we encountered still have a very "rigid" thinking process. They became defensive and arrogant very easily. You can see one here in our thread. (gg) It takes time. We will see more progress made each day.

""Taiwan's democracy movement outside the Chinese communists does have some problem periods. Nothing to write home about here..""

Mr. Chen is the very direct beneficiary of those problem periods. That is why local Taiwanese want to elect only Taiwanese born candidate. They do not believe James Soong and Lien at all. Local Taiwanese think they may sell out Taiwan to China.

Most Chinese from China claim they have every right to get back Taiwan based on history and other factors. They never think why Taiwanese want to go independent. It is the very reason from those "white terror" period that scare most local born Taiwanese. Especially those politicians use the very excuse to get themselves elected. Local Taiwanese do not want to go through those periods again.

And China communist government continues to press and ignore those facts politically. They do not understand Taiwanese and keep saying that a small group of separatist want to make Taiwan Independent. That is a total wrong understanding from China side. No one wants to go independent if China government has acted rationally.

Well. At least this Taiwan election they are quite. Just look at those peaceful protest and marching in Taiwan. China has no right to say they own Taiwan if they choose to ignore Taiwanese's (local born or 2nd generation Chinese from Mainland China) direct pursuit of democracy. Taiwan and China definitely will have a clash with or without US involved. What is next if China takes over Taiwan? Just another "white terror" period? Do China own Taiwanese mind after the clash? I will bet you no. And China can not afford the war anyway (internally or externally).

Time will tell. JMHO.
