That's a big question.

Many things contributed to the Soviet fall including Reagan's defense buildup which the USSR couldn't keep up with, his firmness in standing up to the leftwing protestors of the day (remember the nuclear freeze movement and the protests about installing missiles in Europe - all designed to relieve the USSR from having to compete militarily). Then there was Reagan's willingness to challenge the Soviets on the field of ideas - the evil empire speech, the tear down this wall speech.

Part of the reason was of course, that Gorbachev wasn't the ruthless killer that previous Soviet rulers had been.

Credit should also be given to Yeltsin who stood up in defiance against the coup attempt against Gorbachev, barricading himself in the Russian Parliament building and refusing to leave.
