A few bad actors were exposed in the process;

High growth, speculative periods tend to cause people to overleverage themselves and then when the tide turns they are stuck and the temptation for fraud presents itself. Worldcom was not *always* a fraudulent company, they committed fraud to cover up their demise due to overleverage. And Sam Waksal sold his imclone stock to avoid a margin call.

Using your own logic Charles, I guess I'll use this to expose your anyone but Bush position.

The market began its decline at least in part in anticipation (correct, as it turns out) that Bush might become President and that his isolationist policies (which have since reversed to be unthinking interventionist policies -- just as bad) and neglect of duty might result in ruin for the economy.

The rest is history. A few bad actors were exposed in the process; they don't account for the rest.
