Hi eddieww,

Nice to have your contribution to the fray. :)

Largely, I find myself in agreement with your viewpoint. The most important characteristic of both Stalin and Hitler's regimes is their authoritarian nature. The left v. right dichotomy offers less insight into the nature of these regimes.

I do have one minor quibble.....

Re: Hitler didn't despise the communists at all. A read of Mein Kampf supports his admiration of their ability and dedication.

I've read the first half of Mein Kampf, and in Hitler's discussion of his formative years as an aspiring architecture student and tradesman in Vienna, he describes his animosity to trade unionists as well as communists. This is a minor hatred, compared with the vitriolic anti-semitism that he began to embrace at the time. But no where in the first 150 pages of Mein Kampf did I ever get the sense that he wasn't politically and philosophically opposed to communism.

You do correctly state his admiration for the organizing ability of the Communists, which came through clearly in the translation I've read. But I certainly didn't recognize any feeling of sympathy on the part of Hitler for the political agenda of the Communists.
