The Hamas cleric had a moral authority that motivated many to give their lives to kill others.

Hitler had this kind of "moral authority" too. Would the LA Times have used the term "moral authority" for Hitler?

As usual, they are clueless enough to miss the big picture, knowing only the 'tit for tat' framework: Ashdod suicide bombing: tit. Yassination: tat.

A little context:

First, Israel is readying to withdraw from Gaza, and they cannot afford to leave a triumphant Hamas in their wake. So they will render Hamas smashed and leaderless. Tonight was only the first move. Invasion to follow soon.

Second, Hamas was on the edge of fighting the PA for the rule of Gaza, and the crowds on the streets today in Gaza are yelling for the PA's blood as much as Israel's. No one that I've read knows how the response will tip, whether Arafat will fight back if Hamas fights the PA, or whether he will use the Hamas-al Aqsa alliance to try to co-opt Hamas. The second seems more his style. If you look over the last year, you see Arafat abandoning the 'legitimate' arms of the PA, as his cabinet attempts to pry his grip off total power, and to concentrate on his boys with the guns, the various bands that look only to him for money: the Tanzim, al Aqsa, Force 17, etc. So I don't think the PA police in Gaza can expect any help from Arafat.
