Clarke is a J. Edgar Hoover style power-meister.. Notice that CBS is getting some trouble for not disclosing that the publishing house is also owned by Viacom, which owns CBS.

Hello Hawk,

No doubt he is this and more which I find disgusting. But none of this rises to the level of sin for me.

I am convinced that he believes what he is saying. He has convinced himself of his vision, his foresight, and his correctness. Now he has achieved stardom and wealth by communicating these beliefs.

These are not crimes in our democracy. Indeed we shower such creatures with wealth and fame. The shame of it is that the "correctness" of his beliefs is completely illusory. They attract us because they are convenient, desirable, sweet, and liberating.

His "judgments and intentions," free us from responsibility for our "evil" past. Confess his "truth" and you too can be blessed with the benefits of righteous democracy once more. You too can have The Solution to the question of Terror. The "incorrectness" of Iraq, its use as an object of American foreign policy, its use as a battle ground, its oil, its people; these will all become pain free irrelevancies, if you simply confess. Because after all... you will be "correct" won't you? <vbg>

When you consider it objectively Hawk, I think you will find that the Clarkeans are no more than the other side of the AlciBushadean coin. The "judgments and intents" diverge, but they both buy the same illusions and they are both required coin of the realm in our democracy.

But fear not Hawkmoon! For I have seen the true Sons of Alcibiades, one Democrat and one Republican, approaching in the distance.

When they arrive we shall have our battle of opposing Charismatic visions. And under the victor's banner we shall split our coins and smite the defeated illusions with such power and might that they shall never rise to devil us again.

But until that day dawns... keep the Dramamine handy.

The authors of this (very interesting and informative) book were NSC apparatchiks and knew Clarke well... see pages 230-33:

amazon.com

They seem to like him, generally, but still he comes off sounding as an ambitious empire-builder, and a bit of a nut. Quote:

"It is no exaggeration to say that one person or another at the cabinet or subcabinet level or in the top NSC staff urged the national security advisor to fire Clarke almost every month".

At any rate, after having presided for so many years over US anti-terrorist efforts this guy has balls to cast stones out of his glass house... He approved Bush on anti-terrorist policies (when he thought that served his own interests) - and he didn't resign over the Iraqi campaign.
