This may sound simple but check the cable going into your sound card by jiggling it with the volume up high.In my computer it has to be real tight.

This has happened to me before.

this may be rather simplistic but have you opened you speaker controls and checked if the mute button is checked. somehow it has happened to me on a couple of occasions and I don't know how
