A lot of people here seem to assume that terrorists are a bunch of inept cowards who will quit if we stand up and strike back at them. That’s a very dangerous assumption.

I think that is said for public consumption. The key thing is that we have to realize that we can't negotiate with them. Ever. They have to be killed or imprisoned when found, and we need an army of forensic accountants constantly finding and stopping their money supply. At the same time, we must do what we can to promote Democracy where possible in the region. Easy? No. Short? No.

It's going to be a long haul. But we really have no other choice.

They are as Muslim as anybody else, and if you ask their opinion, they aren’t at all happy with the US, but they are too busy making money and doing business – much of it with Americans – to act on those opinions.

Nothing would make us happier than to hand this 'prosperity option' to the millions in Egypt, the Palestinian territories, Syria, Lebanon, Pakistan and Iran. Unfortunately, the kleptocratic misrule of their own governments cuts off this option, as it did in Iraq until we invaded. If you continue along this line of thinking, you will be arguing for a democratic reform of the whole Middle East - and sounding like George Bush.
