If I had my way I'd split that piece of land in half, put one group on one side and the other on the other, put a full-scale DMZ, Korean style, between them, and promise utter devastation to anybody making a military move against either of the resulting states

That is what the Israelis are doing. You may not like the way they split it, but they got tired of waiting for the Pals to join in. TWT how well it works, but it is a step in the right direction, IMO.

Anything piece of land large enough to function as a DMZ would take up most of the country. The Israelis doing their best to implement your solution by building a fence. Strangely enough, nobody likes that answer either.
