Just returned from Vietnam yesterday. With no direct flights, the route I chose took me from Hanoi to Taipei to LAX.

On the flight from Hanoi to Taipei, 2/3 to 3/4 of the MD90 was packed with Vietnamese, wearing different baseball caps for identification.

They are on their way to work in Taiwan, on 3 years contracts. The employers appear to be electronics companies. This group appears to be untrained and uneducated.

I have no idea how many Vietnamese are heading to Taiwan in this manner. All I know is that Vietnam, with a population now approaching 80 million, has a limitless supply of cheap labor for Taiwan or whoever interested in importing them.

I have no idea how much these Vietnamese are paid. I only know that generic labor, very willing labor, are a dime a dozen at less than $100 per month.

Mr. Greenspan, those jobs are not coming back. Time to stop dreaming.
