" many don't realize just how good we have it here in Canada. "..

Agreed.

I've also traveled quite a bit , but not likely to these countries as much as you have.

We should be more careful these days though ,as the World appears to be becoming more, not less, dangerous this past few years. We have boarders and infrastructure that need to be protected and an immigration department that needs a complete overhaul , and soon, not in five or ten years time.

There are millions upon millions of excellent , hard working ,intelligent , educated and willing to adapt to our way of life type of people in the world, who would love the opportunity to live here.We should raise the standards , or at the very least , not lower them , just to keep our population growth stable or expanding.

I see we are 1/4 million stronger today by the latest numbers , but our cities are going through a similar transition that the US has in recent times, towards more violence and corruption.

I don't think it is entirely related to immigration , but the vast majority of reports I've been seeing have connections to our lax immigration standards and enforcement. This will cost us dearly in the future if we don't get a handle on it now and tighten things up a bit.

Many people who are standing in line and going through the proper processes are being undercut by those who simply get on a plane and claim refugee status upon landing. That's not fair ,and has a way getting out of control if new laws and measures aren't introduced.

I believe ANYONE coming to this country from other than the US should be required to have a visa before being let on a plane. If they arrive without one they should be turned around and put right back on the next plane back from where they came,at the Airline's expense.

No exceptions, no excuses,no entry without one, to hell with the tourist industry and what they say.If people want to come, they will get a visa.Period.

That won't solve everything ,but it would go along way to freeing up our resources to deal with legitimate visitors and refugees and allow our immigrations department to focus on those who are law abiding before they even get here, and help weed out the undesirables who break our laws even before arriving.

" I just thank God the type of politics and world view espoused by the Republicans just would never fly in Canada. ".....

No doubt many who cast their vote for them are good people with good intentions, but if SI is any indication , there is an element there that certainly would not fit well with this countries overall world outlook and our more tolerant society in general.

But yes , Bush would never get elected here anyway , so we have little to fear from the radical right any time soon.

Steady she goes...<GGG>
