Hamas was once funded and supported by Israel. Israel wanted to avert the threat of a peaceful secular Arafat, so they tried to to boost the fanatical elements in Palestinian society. It worked.

True. But the main thing we are talking about is the party and the fanatic supporters(the majority) that dominate the group and its policies and moves for decades. Unfortunately, those who run hospital and the welfare etc. are not making the trend of the group.
