LJ - No argument here. I'm just trying to look through what I have to see which ones might be looking at an immediate impact (a la CLG). I think that you are right though, that given the rising costs of just about everything, the deposits will have to be good enough to offset the anticipated increased costs of developing them. My point was that Candente are not developing mines themselves so while they will likely be impacted in the way that you have described, it is an indirect impact. Or maybe I'm just trying to justify not selling it here! We'll see if they can get Goldcorp to do something in NFLD, I understand that nothing has been inked but that negotiations are ongoing...

I confess to limited understanding of the fundamentals, but it seems to me that if the CAPEX is higher it would reduce the value of the project to a potential purchaser.

You're right LJ.
There is nothing magic about it.
That leads me to reflect on CLG's Meadowbank. The operation was marginal enough that increased commodity costs killed the project. Makes one wonder how marginal was it? In mining we should never lose sight of the importance of remoteness and depth to the success of a venture. Far north projects had better have exceptional grades and tonnage. But, you already knew this I'm sure.

Cheers

LJ - Fortunately for me, Goldcorp still sees value in Candente's Newfoundland properties. They finally delivered the long-awaited agreement last night:

"The agreement allows Goldcorp to earn up to a 70% interest in either or both of the Staghorn and Linear gold properties by assuming all of Candente's expenditure obligations and completing bankable feasibility studies by January 2010. The option may be extended beyond the six-year period providing expenditures have reached a minimum of $1,000,000 per year by 2009. "

But this was the part I really liked...

"Candente entered Newfoundland on the recommendation of Larry Kornze, (ex-Barrick), Director of Candente, who stated "Newfoundland could host another Carlin Belt (100 million ounces gold hosted by sedimentary rocks) and we don't want to miss it, besides there is too much gold to ignore."

Still a long way to go, but this is a big step in the right direction, imo...
