By mid-month, Chrysler, a unit of DaimlerChrysler AG (DCX) had surpassed General Motors Corp. (GM) in incentives for March, according to CNW Marketing Research. GM's incentives hit $4,299 this month, and Chrysler reached $4,313. Ford Motor Co.'s (F) incentives were $4,168.

"The strategy changes monthly," said Art Spinella, president of CNW. He noted that while incentives appear to be on the rise industrywide, so is the average transaction price. Consumers are paying about $1,000 more per vehicle this year compared with last year.
