"They" are made up of a couple dozen countries with various viewpoints and attitudes toward the West. But that gets in the way of discussing the problem as "they" and "them" to make it easier.

Put it this way - if you are in the US and want to visit an Islamic country, how many choices do you have?

(Hint: You have to get a passport first.)

In December, a Briton and an American were arrested after taking diving lessons in the Red Sea, apparently suspected of planning to attack shipping.

Actually, seems like everyone is acting this way in most parts of the world, so I guess this is just a sign of the times and something we're all going to have to get used to. For example, some people from up here in the Frozen North got supremely hassled down along the St. Lawrence River when they set up their field scopes in the same little spot where they've been watching waterfowl on many weekends for several years. Seems that someone at the U.S. customs checkpoint kind of "over-reacted" and called in some kind of police squad. A bunch of dudes in black cars soon showed up and grilled the birders for a couple of hours before deciding that they weren't spies. However, I believe the incident may even have included some shouting and waving of a gun on the part of the police if I remember the story correctly. In any case, the birders were not particularly impressed by the ordeal. Btw, my own policy concerning the Canada-U.S. border is just to stay entirely away from that area. I haven't bothered going into the U.S. for awhile and don't intend to in the near future if I can help it. Not worth the hassle.
