Never been to the Arab world myself but I hear that Jordan and Syria have great ruins. Large hot sandpiles don't turn me on, despite having visited most of the other major regions of the world.

I speak two foreign languages with a distinct American accent no doubt, but I am pretty good at faking fluency when needed. Wrapping my brain around Croatian grammar was a pretty good feat on its own, I thought.

FWIW, your experience puts you in a tiny minority in the US.

Turkey's Aegean and Southern coast is also great for a sea, sun, nightlife vacation. Watch the topless women on the beach, alcohol flowing in open-air clubs until morning, and watch your preconceptions about "Muslim world" go up in smoke :-)
