Yes there are! and in capital intensive businesses, even with the rules, costing remains very much an art as opposed to a science! One that comes immediately to mind is the timing of goodwill impairment charges...INTC's $600M writeoff in q4, just happened to occur during their highest revenue quarter in FY03...INTC's accounting is very artistic, but scientific in the sense that they can sculpt earnings to come within estimates uncannily! Another "art piece" that comes to mind is AMD's treatment of currency gains last quarter.

Hey,not trying to dodge your initial concern with the idea of sandbagging...AMD has made it perfectly clear on several occasions that costs are in the stratosphere and that huge cost savings are ripe for the picking thru FY04 as new production processes come on stream! Hopefully we'll see some indication in q1 that the "cost reduction" efforts are not only evident but are now just entering the accelerating phase!
