Nobody seems to be commenting on the press release about game developers using AMD64 machines internally. I think this is very big, and about to get bigger. The thing is that these guys do a lot of optimization, and they are optimizing for the machines they are developing on.

AMD64 processors are already the best processors for games, and when the new crop of games emerges, AMD may be further ahead.

But there are also broader implications. All developers out there, if they are about to get new machines, should be getting AMD64 machines, since that is where the market will be during the lifetime of their machines. Doing anything else is somewhere between short-sighted to brain dead.

The significance of developers gradually moving to AMD64 machines is the FUD called compatibility. Advertised compatibility with AMD processors was always an afterthought. Later on, once more and more software is developed on AMD's AMD64 machines, the compatibility can be advertised without hesitation.
