East Jerusalem's a bit different -- it's attached to the rest of Jerusalem and is already surrounded by hundreds of thousands of Israelis in the settlements that are Jerusalem's suburbs. Aside from that, in 1948 there actually were probably more Jews there than Arabs, and Jordan kicked all of the Jews out and destroyed all of the Jewish landmarks.

From a number of sources -- it's pretty common knowledge. Remember, the Palestinians, led by Arafat, tried to overthrow King Hussein in the late '60s.
