The trick will be to use this episode to underscore Bush's policies and not fan the flames surrounding Clarke. The 911 investigation actually took on too much rope and now Bush could virtually hang the Democrats with it, showing how for eight years Democrats (including Clarke as a Clinton holdover) did nothing on terrorism while terrorists infiltrated our country. He needs to strike very hard on this issue, showing terrorist attack after terrorist attack under the Democrats and showing how the soft Democrats did not take on their enemies. He needs to lead the narrative right up to 911, to show the pattern and horrific result of Democrat unresponsiveness. Then he needs to show how, after a mere 7 months in office, he changed the pattern - both here and abroad.

If he does this with consistency, Americans will not wish to change the status quo, to risk changing from what is, under the circumstances, a very stable situation.

And get this, no one is even talking about the economy now with this false hoopla. The Democrats are off message and they don't even know it.

Bush can win big here for ages, choking the Democrats on their own vomit, if he can strike quickly and hard. It would force the Dems to respond and he could hit them repeatedly, defining the Democrats, himself and Iraq all at the same time.
