That would be a Pileated Woodpecker. They don't peck little holes looking for bugs in the trees, they peel the bark off in strips. They tend to live more in the North. I used to watch them went we'd go to Canada.

I have one that is putting holes in my cedar siding for nine months of the year.. want to borrow the dam bird.. You know and bird knows he is protected species.. so i go out , jump up and down and he looks at me like i am crazy then flies away about twenty , thirty yards to dozens of trees he could enjoy.. Ah, but my cedar he loves. so i stick wood puddy in the hole throw some stain over it and hope he will not come back.. then he starts at another corner.. ggg

ps.. we are on a first name basis.
