I'd argue that the roots of terrorism are political. It arises when there are are no legitimate peaceful political means of achieving a desired end. Those British colonists shooting at the British troops from cover were terrorists. They had no means of forcing changes in British North American policy but force. One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter.

I don't see that a world free of violent action aimed towards political objectives is actually achievable. There is only pie in many situations and more than one group that insists that pie is theirs.
