Hi Frank, I was talking [~2002] with some visiting IT people from NYU about Free Space Wireless ['pipeless dreams'], and their 115 building campus, with an emphasis on outlying buildings. They mentioned that surveying their ESCON fiber would include opening manholes up and down 5th Avenue to physically audit the conduits. Just another buried cost in fiber economics. As far as I know, that ESCON fiber is still in use, but taking up valuable space. petere Thanks for digging into the box of mirrors, which sounded much more important.
