Believe it or not I work for a crown corporation, a provincial power utility. I've seen waste but not too much. I have also seen the conservative buddy (when the conservatives were in power here) outside contractors at the trough too. Good work was done but top dollar was also paid - there could have been savings - IMO it seemed padded to me. Harper will have his buddies to pay off too.

Seems to me the federal government was already cut when the libs balanced the budget. How much true fat can be left? The gun registry is now probably only costing a fraction of what it has cost to establish it. The sponsorship scandal has been a couple hundred million over a few years. The current budget is ~$180 billion. Cutting out the gun registry etc sounds good but it ain't gonna amount to much. A lot of government costs are fixed - theres all the money Mulrony spent that we still have to pay on. You can't cut education or health care any more than it already is.

My theory will likely be proven if Harper gets power. He'll cut taxes and then find no way to fund it - the country goes into debt.Thats exactly what Bush has done - for what? A couple hundered dollars in the average persons pocket. Worse still is he may cut health care in the hopes of forcing a dual system and trying to pay for tax cuts. Canadians may be pissed at the Liberals but they are the status quo - I like the staus quo - Conservatives make me nervous.
