Condoleezza Rice to appear on '60 Minutes'

WASHINGTON -- National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice will be on CBS' "60 Minutes'' this weekend -- but she still isn't going to talk publicly under oath before the independent commission investigating the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.

However, the White House is offering to let the president's top national security aide meet privately for a second time with the federal panel.

The White House said the session would allow Rice to clear up "mischaracterizations'' of her statements and positions.

Rice has spoken frequently and written about the administration's pre- and post-Sept. 11 strategy.

The White House has found itself in the position of trying to explain why Rice can talk to reporters but not at the commission's televised hearings.

The White House counsel said it's important that presidential advisers not be compelled to testify publicly before congressional bodies such as the commission.
