The gas theft was nation wide. We here in Central Illinois still go by pump and then pay. Driving off without paying is so rare that it makes the paper. Read a good one in the Reader's Digest about a station owner who didn't shut his pumps off when he closed and the next day saw several cars leaving when he drove in. One driver was left and when he paid he paid for all the gas. Each driver had given the money to whomever was pulling in so the last guy had everybodies money. That still happens in small towns.
