Amy, how the heck should I know or claim to know what statistics are correct, no matter where the stats come from? Do you know what would be correct? Do you see how silly this conversation becomes after a while? We have a government which collects various statistics on various things. The theories and systems which could be employed to collect those statistics are probably endless. Taxpayers can only afford one method. If the same method is employed over time, it might possibly reveal a trend. A trend may be all we can hope for--not precision.
